4 Ways to Give Back in Your HOA This Year

Homeowners associations (HOAs) exist for the benefit of the whole community. The board upholds governing documents to protect property value and manages common areas and amenities open to all homeowners. HOAs run much more efficiently and effectively when everyone works together and does their part. You don’t have to be on the board to have a positive impact. Here are a few ways that you can give back and support your community:

  1. Follow the rules. Familiarize yourself with the governing documents, and make sure you’re adhering to them. The fewer violations the board has to handle, the more time they can spend focusing on bigger issues and improving the community. If you have a question about whether you can paint your shutters a certain color or build a shed, ask before you go ahead and do it. Follow proper protocol and get necessary approvals before making any final decisions.
  2. Attend HOA meetings. As a homeowner, you’re an integral part of the HOA. Attend as many meetings as you can so that you’re up-to-date on what is happening. Speak up if you have a question, concern, or suggestion. That’s how change happens. If no one shares their ideas, nothing improves.
  3. Get involved. Consider joining a committee and leveraging some of your interests or skills in a different way. It’s a great way to meet others, support the neighborhood, and make a positive difference. If a certain committee doesn’t exist but you feel it would be beneficial, you may be able to start it. For those who feel they don’t have the time to devote to a committee, offer to be a volunteer at different events or activities. It’s rare that they will turn down extra help – the more the merrier, and there’s always something to do.
  4. Help a neighbor. Give back by being a good neighbor and helping someone in need. Assist your neighbor with raking up leaves, hanging decorations, or carrying in groceries from their car. Get their mail while they’re on vacation, or offer to water their flowers. Take a moment to stop and give them a compliment or ask how they’ve been. A little bit of kindness can go a long way.

Help make your community an even better place to live by giving back and showing your support. You don’t have to do anything extravagant – just be a good neighbor, be conscientious about your decisions, and speak up if you have ideas or concerns. Everyone’s voice is important. If you have questions or don’t know where to find certain information, contact your property manager or board. Kuester supports HOA communities throughout the Carolinas in running more effectively.
