New Years Resolutions for Your HOA

There is no time like the beginning of a new year to turn over a new leaf, and start making improvements to the way you do things—and that’s true not only of individuals, but of your HOA board, as well! As 2011 winds down and your HOA begins thinking toward its future, consider some of the ways in which you can resolve to provide an even better community with a few good New Years Resolutions for Your HOA.

  1. Involve your members. This might be the single area in which HOA boards struggle the most; when there is a lack of transparency, and a dearth in community involvement, though, residents can ultimately be resentful of the HOA board, thinking you are not doing enough or are not acting in their best interests. Get more folks involved by publicizing more open meetings, and by sending out surveys to gauge your community’s needs.
  2. Plan to use your resources more responsibly. Go over your 2011 budget and expense reports and isolate any expenses that could have been avoided—and plan for this year’s spending accordingly! You might also look over all your contracts and see if there are any vendors you simply don’t need, or could cut back on.
  3. Motivate your community members positively. They will ultimately be a lot more receptive to what your HOA does if they feel like they are appreciated. Applaud those who work hard to improve the community. Also plan more fun stuff—field trips, community-wide parties, and so on!
  4. Pledge to enforce stricter collection policies. Make sure that a few community members are not carrying everyone else, and make it clear that paying dues is not optional for community members!
  5. Seek to improve your board meetings. The best way to do this might be simply gathering some feedback. Reach out to board members and ask how they feel about the meetings, and how they might be improved. Act on their advice to streamline your HOA and ultimately become more efficient!
