Keeping Kids Safe During the Summer Season

In many HOA-governed communities, the summer months are filled with endless entertainments for kids and parents alike. Whether it’s an afternoon at the community pool, a neighborhood cook-out or block party, or simply a long summer evening spend in the great outdoors, it seems like youngsters always have something to keep them occupied when they’re not in school. With the many opportunities that summer offers, however, there also come some potential safety issues. The following safety tips are critical for parents and community members alike, as they seek to keeping kids safe during the summer season.

  • First and foremost, for any outdoor activity, there is going to come a risk of bug bites. Make sure to spray your kids with insect repellant before you send them off for outdoor fun. Note that sprays using DEET should be used sparingly, as this substance can prove toxic; a better approach is simply to check the labels of your bug sprays and pick something without DEET listed.
  • During tick season, it’s important to be vigilant in checking your kids for ticks after they’ve been outside for very long. Having them wear light-colored clothing makes ticks easier to spot.
  • Pool safety is also a big concern. Never let kids go to the pool without adult supervision—no matter how old they are or how well they can swim.
  • Check any playground equipment before letting kids play on it. Pay special attention to loose ropes or hot surfaces, both of which can cause injuries or burns.
  • It goes without saying, just about, that kids need to wear helmets when riding bikes or skateboards!
  • Make sure you know the signs of poison ivy and oak, and that you have a topical ointment ready to apply should your kids ever break out.
  • Finally, remember that the biggest cause of summer injury is heat. Keep your kids hydrated to avoid undue heat sicknesses!

HOA board members, share these tips with your residents as you encourage everyone in your community to put safety first in the remaining weeks of summer!
