Homeowner Tips: 4 Ways to Prepare for Fall

It’s hard to believe—and it doesn’t necessarily feel like it, here in the Carolinas—but the autumn season will be here before we know it. Kids are back in school, the lawn mowing season is winding down, pools are closing, and soon enough there will be a crispness in the morning air, alerting us to fall’s arrival.

Each new season brings a list of things homeowners can and should do to protect their property values. Indeed, there are a few things you can start doing in the weeks to come, to get your home ready for autumn and to ultimately ensure your home’s wellbeing even through winter.

Our four Ways to Prepare for Fall and Autumn include:

  • Attend to your landscaping. Remember that fall is the time for pruning and fertilizing. You’ll want to prune your plants before it starts getting too cold outside, as pruning too close to winter can cause damage to the plants. You’ll also want to rake away old mulch and lay some fresh mulch, giving your plants nutrients throughout the coming winter.
  • Now is a good time to pressure wash the house, too. This is something that’s recommended every three or four years, to maintain a clean feel, and the end of summer is the best time to do it.
  • Check around the foundation of your home, looking for any fractured bricks or sings of moisture damage—mildew, mold, or standing water. Also look for cracks in your patio or around your window and door seals. Have repairs made where needed, waterproofing your home and ensuring energy efficiency.
  • Finally, before winter comes, invest in some good curtains or blinds. Window fixtures can play a huge role in keeping your home warm, and decreasing energy bills!

It’s a little difficult to start thinking in terms of fall/winter just yet, but it really is right around the corner—and now really is the ideal time to prepare for Fall!
