For the homeowner, different seasons bring different responsibilities, different challenges, and different around the home maintenance tips for consideration. With the month of June finally here—and summer weather long set in—now is as good a time as any for homeowners to think about some summer maintenance tasks.
- Probably the #1 item on your summer home maintenance list should be getting your air conditioner tuned up. You really should have it inspected, by an HVAC professional, once per year; your inspector will check the fan and also look at refrigerant levels, ensuring that your unit is running smoothly and efficiently. You should also change your air filters regularly—probably once a month or so—to keep your unit running properly and your utility bills low.
- Check your recreational equipment—inspecting gas grill lines for signs of rust and damage, and also checking the pool pump for leaks!
- Now that seeds and blossoms are done blowing about—clogging gutters and potentially making a mess—it’s a good time to bring out the ladder and clean your gutters. This is something you should do a couple of times, ideally, and late spring/early summer is one of the recommended times.
- The start of summer also marks a great time to check around your windows and doors—outside and inside—for cracks and fissures. If you notice any little opening where cool air might be escaping your home, get some caulk and seal it up!
- Pressure wash your house, removing dirt and grime that have built up over winter and spring. Just make sure you are thorough in covering electrical outlets when you do so, and also stay away from windows, doors, and plants. (Or else, cover those, too.)
- Dust off your carbon monoxide detectors and replace their batteries.
The homeowner’s work is never done, but one of the best ways to keep up with household maintenance is to prioritize it by season—and these tasks should certainly be priorities during the summer!
