HOA Tips: Ramping Up for the Spring Lawn Maintenance Season

Spring is nearly here, and for most of us, the very thought of warmer weather brings a sigh of relief. Of course, the spring season is not just an endless line-up of cook-outs and garden parties. Spring also means lawn maintenance season is well upon us—and for HOA board and homeowners alike, that means the time to begin ramping up for the lawn care season is now!

Here are five basic pointers we would offer for getting the spring lawn maintenance season off to a strong start.

1. To begin with, consider applying a pre-emergent product to your lawn, which will help prevent the growth of unwanted weeds, dandelions, and so on. You can buy pre-emergent products at most home improvement stores, but you may wish to speak with your lawn care professional before doing so. For HOAs that use external vendors to provide lawn maintenance, this is a great time to speak with them about their anti-weed services.

2. Before the end of March, do your “first mow” of the season. This is probably going to be a little tough, as the winter months may have left your lawns looking pretty unkempt. Bag the clippings and dispose of them, if at all possible.

3. Refresh the mulch or pine needles in your beds. Not only will this make the landscaping look nicer and more colorful, but it will help with weed prevention, too!

4. Do some pressure-washing. The winter months often leave buildings and driveways looking soiled, so now is a great time to pressure-wash common areas.

5. Schedule your gutter cleaning—as soon as possible! The very last thing you want to deal with is a major gutter problem—or worse, a full-on roof problem—during the rainy spring months!

These tips can provide your HOA—and its residents—with a great blueprint for spring lawn maintenance success!
