Getting Ready for the Spring Lawn Care Season

Here in the Carolinas, we’ve already enjoyed the year’s first taste of warm weather, with a number of 70-degree days just last week. While winter probably isn’t totally done with us yet, homeowners are nevertheless beginning to shift their attention toward the spring lawn care season, which will be here before we know it.

Spring lawn maintenance season is a bit of a mixed blessing; while homeowners typically prefer the warmer weather and the greener yards, they don’t necessarily love the expenses or the hard work that come with keeping a lawn healthy. By getting a jump start on it now, though, you can ease your spring lawn maintenance burden—and perhaps even save some money in the process.

HOA board members, share some of these tips with homeowners who are looking to get a jump start on spring lawn maintenance:

– First, note that winter snows can cause grass to become matted and clumpy. It’s smart to go outside with a rake and shake out some of the dead grass. The goal is to give the new grass, growing under those dead, matted clumps, the chance to get some sunlight and to truly grow.

– Do something to boost the pH level of your soil, which will help the grass grow better. Lime treatments and compost both work well; you can even get a local lawn company to perform a lime treatment for a fairly small price.

– Spot-treat any weeds you see growing, pulling them out (with their roots) before the lawn maintenance season begins in earnest. This will save you some headaches down the road.

– Don’t delay in putting down some mulch. The mulch will insulate the roots of your plants while the temperatures continues to fluctuate, leading to much healthier growth during spring and summer.

– Finally, think about either purchasing a new blade for your mower or sharpening your current one—ensuring a nice clean cut, and making certain your mower performs well throughout the coming lawn care season!

By following through with these steps now, you can ensure a smoother spring season of lawn preparation!
