Getting Your HOA Community into the Holiday Spirit

The end of the year is filled with holidays, starting at Halloween and running through the New Year. It’s a time of excitement for children and adults alike as families come together to share delicious meals, exchange gifts, attend parties or special events, and enjoy each other’s company. HOA communities can do their part to get in on the fun as well and bring homeowners together. The holidays are a wonderful opportunity for neighbors to get to know each other better.

Whether the community is large or small, there are plenty of ways to get in the spirit:

  • Host a community party: The scope of the event will depend on what funds your HOA has allotted in its budget and how much people want to get involved. Some groups opt for a catered meal or buffet while others let everyone share their favorite dishes pot-luck style. Music can be played on a stereo or over a loud speaker, or perhaps a member is part of an ensemble that would like to play live music. Someone on piano is a great option for festive background music too.
  • Hold a decorating contest: Encourage homeowners to tastefully decorate their homes for the winter holidays. This can also be a perfect opportunity to remind everyone of guidelines regarding lawn décor, lights, inflatables, or other decorations. Have an unbiased panel review all of the homes, select the nicest one or top three, and present gift cards as prizes. Remember that decorations don’t have to be holiday specific – they could embrace the winter season in general.
  • Arrange a volunteer activity: Another way to bring people together is to offer an opportunity to volunteer. Find a local organization that needs help and have a sign-up sheet for when your group will attend. Or, your community may decide to collect food to donate to a food bank for holiday meals, or coats and hats to keep families warm. You may also look into getting involved with an angel tree and donating gifts to families in need, or collecting supplies for local schools.

The opportunities are endless. Gather feedback from homeowners about what interests them and what types of activities they would like to participate in. Every community is different, so figure out what works best for your members. And don’t forget that you can hold events throughout the year with different themes to keep everyone connected and working together. Kuester Management Group can help your HOA plan events, provide communication, and create a more cohesive organization.
