Get Your Home Ready for Autumn Weather

Though it seems like summer has only begun, we’re quickly hurtling toward autumn. Before you know it, the leaves will be changing and cooler weather will replace the heat of summer. Now is a great time to consider how you can prepare the HOA community for the arrival of fall. There is a lot more to take into consideration than just cleaning up falling leaves, but that’s a good place to start.

  • Clear the gutters. Summer storms can leave a lot of debris in gutters that block the flow of rain. Make sure they’re all cleaned out and in good condition for fall and winter weather. While you’re up there, check out the roof as well to see if any damage has occurred that will need to be addressed. The last thing you want is missing shingles or leaks come winter!
  • Prepare landscaping. Pull up the summer flowers and replace them with hardier plants that can withstand the cooler weather while still looking nice. It can also be a good time to plant bulbs for spring and overseed thinning patches in your lawn depending on the grass type. Some people like to aerate in the fall as well.
  • Close down the pool. The HOA will also want to set a date to close the pool so that final inspections can be made and repairs scheduled before winter rolls in. Homeowners should do the same for their personal pools. If outdoor furniture is being packed up, give it a good cleaning first.
  • Check windows and doors. Look for any cracks in insulation or weather stripping that can let cold air in or warm air out. Make sure there is a tight seal.
  • Inspect the chimney. If you have a fireplace, have a professional come out to clean and inspect your chimney for buildup or damage. You want to make sure it is in good working order before you start a fire so you’re not putting your home or family at risk.
  • Replace batteries. When you change the clocks in fall and spring, it’s also a good time to replace the batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Don’t wait until they start chirping or the batteries have already died.
  • Change up décor. On the fun side, the arrival of autumn means the opportunity to put away your summer decorations and change things up for fall. Before you know it, the kids will be ready to decorate for Halloween! Just double-check your HOA rules to make sure your décor is in compliance.

Homeowners and the HOA alike can make sure that homes and buildings have been prepped for the arrival of cooler weather and preventive maintenance has been scheduled.
