Can an HOA Help Homeowners Beat the Heat?

We’re more or less in the dead of summer right now, and, here in the Carolinas, the heat seems like it’s more severe than it’s ever been. That’s not just true in Charlotte, either; all over the country, folks are trying to devise ways to stay cool, and to keep their homes comfortable despite overwhelming temperatures. The good news is that there are some ways in which homeowners can make sure they’re prepared to continue subduing the hot weather this summer—and the HOA can help by distributing these tips, or even by assisting homeowners in carrying out some of these steps.

  • One of the worst things that could possibly happen to a homeowner, in the dead of summer, is for his or her air conditioner to give out. Homeowners should check to ensure that the unit has been serviced within the past two years—and if not, they should schedule maintenance as soon as possible!
  • Homeowners can help that AC unit work better by patching up any holes or openings they see around windows and doors; a little caulk can help keep that cool air in the house, not out!
  • The summer months will obviously call for more regular pool maintenance; at least one day a week of serious pool cleaning is vital. This, of course, may fall upon homeowners, or upon the HOA itself, depending on whether the community has private or public pool areas.
  • Finally, there are seasonal concerns beyond the heat. In Carolina—and many other parts of the country—there is often severe rain, even hail during the summer months. This is a good time for the HOA to review what its insurance policy says about hail damage—and to encourage homeowners to do the same, as applicable!

The summer months can be a lot of fun, despite the severe elements. HOAs can work toward a pleasant, low-key summer among its residents by encouraging homeowners to follow these important summer maintenance tips.
