Attention New Board Members: 4 Great Sources of HOA Education

Being elected to serve on an HOA Board of Directors is a distinct honor, but it comes with plenty of responsibilities. Because of this, some new board members feel a bit daunted. You can combat this feeling, and prepare yourself to serve the community diligently, simply by engaging in a little bit of new board member HOA education. There are four great ways to do so.

  • The first place to turn for HOA education is to the Community Associations Institute, or CAI. CAI is a national non-profit group, dedicated to helping community boards function as seamlessly and as peacefully as possible. The CAI website has copious amounts of educational resources and training courses, including an excellent Board Member Basics course that is available to board members and non-members alike. To take full advantage of all the CAI resources, you will need to have a membership; check with your HOA management company to see if it will provide you with that membership.
  • Another place to turn for education is to your Community Manager. Call and schedule a time to meet in your Manager’s office, or perhaps to go out to lunch with him or her, and to ask all of the pressing questions you have about serving on the HOA board. Take full advantage of this individual’s years of expertise!
  • You can also reach out to your community’s HOA Management Company more generally; a lot of the HOA companies out there will offer training sessions, on diverse topics, somewhat regularly.
  • Finally, don’t forget that you’ve always got the Internet at your fingertips, and that some quick Google searches can reveal some great information on any number of HOA-related topics!

For new board members, successful service depends on ample HOA education, so make sure you take advantage of each of these HOA training opportunities!
