5 Simple Ways to Become a Better HOA Member

Your HOA is only as strong as its members—which begs the question: How are you contributing to the community? Are you doing everything in your power to be an asset to your neighbors, and to the HOA overall?

There are a number of ways in which you can be a better HOA member—and most of them are pretty straightforward! Here are five recommendations for you to consider.

Our Advice: How to Be a Better HOA Member

1. Review the rules and regulations.

When you joined the HOA, you signed off on a number of documents that outlined the community’s rules and expectations. If you haven’t read back over those rules in a while, now’s a good time to do so. Simply take a few minutes to brush up on what the Association expects and requires of you.

2. Stay in the loop.

Hopefully, you belong to an HOA that regularly sends out email updates, newsletters, and announcements. (If not, then your Board has a communication problem—but that’s a post for another day!) Don’t toss these documents into the garbage can unread; take the time to actually read up on what’s happening in your HOA!

3. Pay your dues.

No, literally—pay your HOA fees and assessments, and do so in a timely manner! These funds go toward maintaining a safe, secure, and cared-for community. Hopefully, your HOA provides an automatic payment option to make things easy for you. (Don’t hesitate to ask about this.)

4. Consider volunteering.

There is typically no shortage of opportunities to serve within your HOA. You may even wish to run for a seat on the Board! To learn more about the opportunities available to you, get in touch with a Board member.

5. Maintain your home and your property.

Finally, remember that the goal of any HOA is to help homeowners preserve property values, and to keep their community looking its absolute best. Play your part by being attentive to lawn maintenance, basic household upkeep, and anything else stipulated in the HOA rules and regulations.
