With another Labor Day come and gone, HOA board members should begin shifting their attention from the summer mowing season to the autumn lawn care cycle. Of course, the mowing season is not actually over yet—for most, it will run another month or two—but it is never too early for your HOA to begin thinking seriously about autumn lawn care. Consider our five tips as you think about getting your autumn lawn care period off on the right foot. (And, as always, please share these tips with homeowners in your community!) - Remember, for starters, that as summer drifts away and cooler weather starts to set in, your lawn is preparing to go dormant for the winter season. As such, it is important to make sure your lawn is able to store up all of the nutrients that it needs. This makes fertilization a must during the fall season.
- The fall season is also ideal for aeration. During the summer months, traffic across your grass can cause it to become compacted, which prohibits the proper intake of nutrients and water. Aeration combats this, and can ultimately lead to a fuller, healthier lawn next spring.
- Rake regularly. Raking leaves is nobody’s idea of a good time, but a failure to promptly rake leaves will cause them to become tangled together—a sprawling, wet mess that suffocates your grass and prohibits proper lawn growth. Obviously, this is something you want to prevent!
- The fall months represent the absolute best time to fight weeds. Weeds—like other plants—are seeking to soak up as much energy as possible to make it through the winter. As such, you can kill them with greater ease than you could during the summer, and you can prevent them from coming back in the spring.
- Finally, remember to keep watering and mowing, as needed, during the fall season. Just because we’re past Labor Day does not mean summer weather is gone for good!
