4 Tips for Increasing Safety in HOA Communities

Everyone wants to feel safe in their home and community. They want to know that their family and property are protected and the proper precautions are in place. HOA communities are no different. There are several ways that HOAs can strive to enhance safety measures and let homeowners know that they are a top priority.

  1. Partner with Local Law Enforcement. Establish a positive relationship with local officers assigned to the neighborhood. Set up a time where homeowners can meet with them so they become more familiar with who is patrolling the area and feel comfortable voicing concerns. Knowing that regular patrols are made can help curb illegal activity.
  2. Install proper lighting and alarms in community areas. Ensure that community areas are well lit and secured. Consider using motion sensors for more cost efficiency while still providing adequate lighting as necessary. Installing alarm systems can be beneficial as well so that assets remain protected and are monitored around the clock. Should a break in occur, the proper officials would be notified in a timely manner.
  3. Periodically scan the grounds for potential hazards. Evaluate the community for broken or damaged property, fallen branches or debris, and other potentially dangerous situations. Encourage homeowners to alert the board to any concerns they may have so that these situations can be addressed in a timely manner. Have a system in place for filing concerns and make sure to follow up.
  4. Install speed bumps to slow traffic. Homeowners may drive more quickly through the community than they realize and this can be a safety concern to pedestrians and other drivers. Budgeting for speed bumps can help to make drivers more aware of their speed and encourage them to slow down and pay attention. Boards can also confer with police to have them conduct speed checks periodically and enforce appropriate speed limits.

Remind homeowners of safety precautions and how they can be more proactive in reducing crime and protecting themselves and their neighbors. When everyone works together, they can make the community a safer, more enjoyable environment to live in.
